As far as I’m concerned, the death of Willy is by no accident, it’s inevitable. After chewing over the matter, I think there are three factors that may contribute to his death.
In the first instance, it’s much to do with his character. As a human being, everyone has his due pride、character and dignity. But from Willy ‘s part, he seems to pay more attention on his dignity and pride. What he wants is nothing but to succeed、live better than others and immerse in a vast sea of envy showed by others. He’s just too aggressive for these.
Next, the failure of his sons is also an indispensible factor for his death. As a father, a man with great ambitions, he wishes to see his image and dreams in his sons, who are either lost about career or playful with girls. But for him, being lost in the greatest country as such an attractive young man is unforgivable. That’s just what has been always pushing him off the abyss. Disappointed and heart-broken, he chooses to kill himself at last. Personally, I think it’s not the reward he deserves. What he does is but a reflection of his love towards his boy.
Finally, in the last analysis, the responsibility for his death lies in the social background of his contemporary. The death of
Willy just accuses the American way of life and reveals the law of social life in United States——losers have no right to live. Besides, through the failure of these two generations, it also denies the ‘American Myth’ which claims that it’s possible for everyone to succeed by hard working and display the disillusionment of the American Dream.
