第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

I was in a shopping mall recently, and I decided to go and get a cup of tea. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an old gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from the first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it.

There was a young man in front of me in the line also waiting to be served. The young man handed the servant a twenty-dollar bill and asked for an orange juice as well as a favor. The servant looked at the young man with a little surprise, not fully understanding him. The young man asked her to give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench. The young man also told her that he would be watching every second so that she would be completely safe at all times. Later, there was a wonderful exchange (交换) between the waitress and the old man. I only wished I had taken a photo of the smiles on both of their faces.

As I was thinking about this event later on, I wondered why the young man didn’t just perform this act of kindness himself. I thought he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for the old man as well. Thinking of the happy smiles on the old man’s face, I felt how worthwhile it is to help others. 21. The underlined word “favor” in Para. 2 refers to .

A. passing the young man a cup of orange juice B. buying lunch for the old man C. giving the juice to the old man A. Humorous and helpful.

D. exchanging meals with the old man B. Generous and proud. D. Kind and considerate.

22. Which of the following can be used to describe the young man? C. Rich and friendly. A. more people would be inspired to do good deeds B. he would become famous for his good deed C. the old man could probably accept it D. he would become a friend of the servant

B

The Horn of Plenty is one of the largest natural health food stores within the Greater Hamilton area. We are big supporters of buying locally and we are here to tell you why it is so important for your family, the community and the environment.

The concept (概念) of buying locally is simple: buy food produced, grown, or raised as close to your home as possible. Not only will your food be fresher and tastier, but you are helping protect the environment and are supporting businesses within your community and reducing pollution.

Better for the environment

Sustainability (持续性) and global warming are such hot topics at the moment, and many people want to do their bit to help support a healthier environment. Small action carried out by many people can make a big difference.

1第

23. In the author’s opinion, the young man asked the servant to take the juice to the old man so that . Most materials in an average North American meal have traveled about 1,500 miles to get from farm to plate. To cut out a big part of this travel would greatly reduce not only pollution from transportation and refrigeration but also customers’ expenses as well.

Taste and nutritional content

Locally-grown fruits and vegetables are usually sold within 24 hours of being harvested. Because they are picked at the height of ripeness (成熟) and travel only a short distance to the market, their freshness, nutrition, and flavor are kept. Produce trucked in from far away may lose both taste and nutritional content.

Community and home values

When you buy direct from a farmer or buy locally-grown foods, you are engaging in a time-honored tradition between a grower and an eater. You also help keep dollars within your community. 24. It can be inferred from the third paragraph that .

A. global warming is the most serious problem now

B. the increased cost of transporting food is passed on to the customers C. North American food is rich in various kinds of materials D. most people support buying locally A. they are sent to the market at a high speed B. they are not polluted by chemical fertilizer C. they can be harvested at any time D. they are picked when they are fully grown A. you can see how fruits and vegetables grow B. you will become much healthier and prettier C. you will contribute to protecting the environment D. you are making money from your community A. The benefits of buying locally. B. The popularity of the Horn of Plenty. C. The importance of protecting the environment. D. The way to keep your food tasty and healthy.

C

People often say that money talks. They mean that a person with a lot of money can say how he or she wants things done. But it is not easy to earn enough money to gain this kind of power.

Sometimes people in business feel businesses are as dangerous as wild animals in a jungle. They have to be careful if they are to survive the jungle out there. They must not be led into making bogus investments (投资). Bogus means something that is not real. It was said that the word came from a criminal (罪犯) whose name was Borghese. Borghese wrote checks to people although he didn’t have money. After he wrote the checks, he would disappear. So, people who were paid with his checks received nothing.

People trying to earn money also must be aware of being ripped off. A person who is ripped off has had

25. Locally-grown fruits and vegetables taste good mostly because .

26. According to the author, when you buy locally-grown foods .

27. What does the passage mainly talk about?

something stolen, or at least has been treated unfairly. To keep from getting ripped off in business, people had better try to earn money step by step instead of getting rich quickly.

To be successful, a person in business works hard and tries to get down to brass tacks. For example, a salesman may talk about his product without saying the price. You get down to brass tacks when you say, “It sounds good, but how much does it cost?” Word experts thought the expression came from sailors on ships. They cleaned the bottom of a boat. After they finished, they were down to the brass tacks, the copper pieces that held the boat together. So, if we get down to brass tacks, we can avoid rip-offs and bogus ways of earning money. 28. What would happen to those people who make bogus investments?

A. They would lose a lot of money. C. They would receive nothing but checks. A. work as hard as possible C. avoid becoming wealthy eagerly A. keep themselves from being fooled C. reduce their production costs A. News and business. C. Words and their stories.

B. They would disappear after that.

D. They were more likely to be punished by law. B. ask for checks in advance D. earn as more money as you can B. develop more ways of earning money D. get in touch with more partners B. The history of language. D. Funny new expressions. D

More often than not, people will look at the phone screen to check for new messages or have a quick look at Facebook. Researchers have now found why we often feel such a strong need to look at our phones. Using the mobile phone, they say, is contagious (蔓延的).

A team says people are twice as likely to pull out their phones to check their text messages or e-mails if they’re with someone that has just done the same. They also found that women were more likely to use their mobile phones than men. The team watched students in dining halls and coffee shops around the college, observing pairs of college students sitting at tables for as long as 20 minutes and recording their cellphone use. “What we found most interesting was just how often people were using their mobile phones,” Dr. Daniel Kruger, the study’s co-author, said. “Every person we studied used his or her phone at least once while one woman was on hers about half of the time. People saw others checking their incoming messages and began to check their own.”

“Cellphones create another choice for one’s attention and may both support and disagree with live social activities,” the researchers wrote. Kruger believed this could be explained by the effects of social inclusion (包含) and exclusion (排除). If one person in a pair starts a conversation through his phone, the other one may feel excluded and then feel the need to get in touch with others so as not to feel left out.

The researchers note that they might not get the same result in a study of different people—for example, older adults, who may not have a habit of using cellphones so often. 32. From the study we can learn that .

29. The best way to avoid being ripped off in business is to .

30. When doing business, people prefer to get down to brass tacks to .

31. In which part of a newspaper can we find this passage?

A. people can affect each other in using mobile phones B. using mobile phones has nothing to do with social activities

3第

C. men are more likely to be affected by others’ using mobile phones D. the sound of mobile phones makes using mobile phones contagious A. will find that old adults don’t like to use mobile phones B. will find that mobile phones are harmful to health C. will no longer like using mobile phones D. may reach a different result A. Supportive. B. Objective. A. How to use mobile phones correctly B. Why college students like mobile phones

C. Relation between mobile phones and people’s hobbies D. Something interesting about the habit of using mobile phones

do it again. 36 Unfortunately, some kids start cheating and feel like they can’t stop.

37 Whether they are caught or not, these kids may feel guilty or ashamed. Even if the cheater feels fine or doesn’t get caught, that doesn’t mean it’s OK. If you see someone cheating, or if someone asks to copy your work, you can tell a teacher or another grown-up.

Kids who get caught cheating might be given a “zero” score, be sent to the headmaster’s office and even have their parents contacted. Worse than the bad grade may be the feeling of having disappointed other people, like parents and teachers. 38 A teacher might watch you more closely the next time you’re taking a test.

Cheaters cheat themselves in a way because they don’t make an honest attempt to learn as much as they can. 39 That can catch up with you when you get older! And adults who cheat will get into serious trouble.

There are plenty of reasons why a kid shouldn’t cheat, but some kids have already cheated. 40 Cheating can become a habit, but like other bad habits, a kid can always decide to act better and make better choices. It might help to talk the problem over with a parent or a teacher. Choosing to play fair and be honest again can help a kid feel relaxed and proud.

A. Others never cheat at all.

B. Others get caught and think it isn’t worth it. C. Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. D. If that’s you, it’s never too late for you to stop it. E. A parent may worry that you are not an honest person. F. Kids who cheat may feel worried about getting caught.

G. For example, if you cheat your way through spelling tests, you won’t learn how to spell. 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)

But when the king looked more closer, he saw a small bush grown in a carck (裂缝) in the rock behind the waterfall. One possible version:

I’m shocked to have learnt about the serious situation of pollution in the Huaihe River. As far as I know, river pollution exists not only in the Huaihe River but also in many other rivers in our country. Besides river pollution, there are also air pollution, soil pollution and noise pollution. They have done great harm to human lives. Fortunately more and more people have come to realize how serious the problem is. Our government has begun to take measures to fight against pollution but there is still a long way to go. We should take care of our earth. We should try our best to win the battle against pollution.
