Full protection, including thermal shutdown,pulse-by-pulse current limiting, and under-voltage lockout aid in thesimple implementation of reliable designs. Both conducted and radiatedEMI have been greatly reduced by limiting the output dv/dt to 150V/µsfor any load condition.The UC1620SP is characterized for operation over the full military tem-perature range of -55°C to +125°C, while the UC3620SP is charac-terized for 0°C to +70°C. Below is a functional de-scription of each major circuit feature.DECODERTable 1 shows the decoding scheme used in the UC3620to decode and drive each of three high current totem poleoutput stages. A forward/reverse signal, pin 13, is used toprovide direction. At any point in time, one driver is sour-cing, one driver is sinking, and the remaining driver is offor tri-stated. Pulse width modulation is accomplished byturning the sink driver off during the monostable resettime, producing a fixed off-time chop mode. Afixed 0.5V internal clamp has been included on theUC3620, and any current spike in the output which gener-ates a sensed voltage greater than 0.5V will immediatelyshut down the outputs. Actual peak current values may beprogrammed by selecting the appropriate value of RS ac-cording to the formula:ERROR AMPLIFIER LIMITA high performance, on-board error amplifier is includedto facilitate implementing closed loop motor control. Errorvoltage generation and loop compensation are easily ac-complished by appropriately configuring the gain andfeedback of this amplifier. To provide a larger dynamic sig-nal range at the output of the error amplifier, a divide by 5resistor network is used to reduce the error signal levelbefore applying to the internal comparator. In addition, aone volt offset has been introduced at the output of theerror amplifier to guarantee control down to zero currentin the output stages. Since this offset is divided by theopen loop gain of the feedback loop, it has virtually no ef-fect on closed loop performance.PROTECTION FUNCTIONSProtective functions including under-voltage lockout, peakcurrent limiting, and thermal shutdown, provide an ex-tremely rugged device capable of surviving under manytypes of fault conditions. Under-voltage lockout guaran-tees the outputs will be off or tri-slated until VCC is suffi-cient for proper operation of the chip.
