黔之驴
黔无驴，有好事者船载以入。至，则无可用，放之山下。虎见之，庞然大物也，以为神。蔽林间窥之。稍出近之，慭慭然莫相知。
他日，驴一鸣，虎大骇，远遁，以为且噬已也，甚恐。然往来视之，觉无异能者。益习其声，又近出前后，终不敢搏。稍近，益狎，荡倚冲冒。 驴不胜怒，蹄之。虎因喜，计之曰：“技止此耳！”因跳踉大阚，断其喉，尽其肉，乃去。

黔地本来没有驴子，有个喜欢多事的人用船运载了一头驴进入黔地。运到后却（发现驴子）没有什么用处，就把它放置在山下。老虎看到它，原来是个巨大的动物，就把它当做了神。于是隐藏在树林中偷偷地看它，渐渐地出来接近它，小心谨慎，不了解它究竟是什么东西。
有一天，驴子一声长鸣，老虎听了非常害怕，远远地逃走了，认为驴子将要咬自己，非常恐惧。然而老虎来来往往地观察它，觉得驴子没有什么特别的本领似的。渐 渐地习惯了它的叫声，又靠近它，前前后后地走动；但老虎始终不敢扑击驴子。老虎渐渐又靠近驴子，态度更为随便（更加不庄重），碰撞它，靠近它，冲击它，冒 犯它，驴子禁不住发怒，就用蹄子踢老虎。
老虎因此而高兴，盘算着这件事，心想：“它的本领只不过如此罢了！”于是老虎一下跳跃过去，大声怒吼，咬断了驴的喉咙，吃完了它的肉，才离开（走了）。

Donkeys were not found in Guizhou in old time. A man of fancy ideas shipped one there, but then he found no use for it and set it loose at the foot of a mountain.
There were no donkeys in Guizhou until someone officious took one there by boat; but finding no use for it he set it loose in the hills.
虎见之，庞然大物也，以为神。
A tiger saw this monstrous beast and thought it must be super-powerful.

Therefore, he quickly hid himself in the woods and stole a good look at the strange creature. By and by the tiger came out and tried to approach it with great caution, but still wondered what it was.
It first surveyed the donkey from under cover, and then ventured a little nearer, still keeping a respectful distance however.
他日，驴一鸣，虎大骇，远遁，以为且噬已也，甚恐。
One day the donkey brayed. The tiger got such a fright that he fled away. He was utterly terrified at the thought that the monster might eat him.

Approaching still nearer, he began to play with it, touching or shoving it and charging at it roughly. The donkey eventually lost its temper and kicked out at the tiger.

虎因喜，计之曰：“技止此耳！”
“So that is all it can do!” thought the tiger, greatly pleased.
“So that’s all it can do!” thought the tiger jubilantly.
因跳踉大阚，断其喉，尽其肉，乃去。
Then he leapt on the donkey, roaring, and sank his sharp teeth into its throat. Having devoured its flesh, the tiger went off contented.

There was a man in the shop. He was a dirty man in an old coat with a cigarette in his mouth. „What do you want?‟ he asked.

„I‟d like to see the elephant man, please,‟ I said.

The man looked at me angrily. „Well, you can‟t‟ he said. „The shop‟s closing now. You can come back tomorrow.‟

„I‟m sorry,‟ I said. „But I would like to see him now. I have no time tomorrow — I have a lot of work to do. But I can give you more than two pence.‟

This is the true story of a man whose body is hideously deformed, but within is a remarkably sensitive and intelligent being. Merrick is exploited by Victorian society and philanthropy. He is befriended by an ambitious and brilliant young surgeon who looks after him in his last few years finding him a home in a London hospital where the lovable freak's presence is shrewdly used for fund raising. Merrick is introduced to high society, becoming dependent on the success his deformity brings him. A well known actress tries to ease his loneliness, but her efforts are thwarted by hypocrisy. Even those who love him can't help him and ultimately he dies from his horrible affliction. Winner of numerous Tony Awards including Best Play, The Elephant Man was revived on Broadway for the 2002 season.
