16、I was twenty years old, and my parents were looking forward to the day when I would be earning my own living. Unfortunately, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted my future occupation to be. The only thing I did know was that I did not want to spend the next 45 years teaching, being a nurse or sitting in an office. But that was before the postman delivered a catalogue (目录) of courses that were being offered at the local college. As I looked through it, I was attracted by a page that talked about the difficulties faced by deaf people in their everyday lives and how students could help by learning sign language. It went on to say that graduates of the course usually find work in different organizations, such as law companies, the Stock Exchange, insurance companies and banks. Then I saw something that really caught my eye: “Singer” are also needed for sporting events, concerts, theatrical performances and, believe it or not, circuses! By the time I got to the bottom of the page, I knew I had found the perfect occupation.

I enrolled (注册) on the course, which to my parents’ great delight was free of charge. The course was brilliant. My favourite part was the final lesson, when our teacher asked us to sign our favourite song. It was really difficult because not only did we have to sign the words, but we also had to find a way of showing whether the song was happy or sad and whether the beat was slow or fast. 17、Think of life as a game in which you are playing with five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit (精神) and you keep all of them in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce (弹跳) back.

But the other four balls, family, health, friends and spirit, are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be broken. They will never be the same. You must understand that and try to have balance in your life. How? Don’t look down on your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different and each of us is special.

Don’t let other people set goals for you. Only you know what is best for yourself. Don’t give up when you still have something to give.____________________________. Don’t be afraid of difficulties. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.

Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going. Don’t be afraid to learn. Knowledge is a treasure (珍宝) you can always carry easily.

Don’t use time or words carelessly. You can’t get them back. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery (秘密), and today is a gift; that’s why we call it “the present”. 18、Do you know how it is when you see someone yawn (打哈欠) and you start yawning too? Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, obviously it’s because we have mirror neurons (神经元) in our brains.

Put simply, the presence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains model after it, whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how we learn to smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people.

Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the areas which relate to our ability to use languages, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to (for example: “The hand took hold of the ball”), the same mirror neurons weretriggeredas when the action was actually performed (in this example, actually taking hold of a ball).

Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which are not fully functioning (行使职责). However, it is not yet known exactly how these discoveries might help find treatments for social disorders.

Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with ever more information about how humans behave,

communicate and spend time together. Indeed, it may turn out to be nearly the same important thing for neuroscience as what Einstein’s theory of relativity (相对论) was for physics. And the next time you have the strong feeling to cough in the cinema when someone else does – well, perhaps you’ll understand why. 1.Mirror neurons can explain ______. A.why we cry when we are hurt B.why we cough when we catch a cold

C.why we smile when we see someone else smile

D.why we yawn when we see someone else get up late

2.The word “triggered” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”. A.set off B.cut off C.broken out D.found out

3.We can learn from the passage that mirror neurons _______. A.relate to human behavior and communication B.decide our knowledge and language abilities C.result in bad behavior and social disorders D.control human actions and appearances 4.What is the passage mainly about? A.Ways to find mirror neurons. B.Problems of mirror neurons. C.Discovery of mirror neurons. D.Functions of mirror neurons. Ⅴ.书面表达

19、Dear Sir ar Madam

I am very happy to have a student in my home. There are three people in my family, my mother, my father and I. We live in a big flat in the city center, so

transportation is very easy. We have a spare bedroom at home, so the exchange student who lives in my flat can have his own bedroom.

I hope I can have a student who is easy-going and humorous. He doesn't have to be hard-working or generous, though. I love playing ball games, so I hope the student loves to do sports too.

I can show him around our city and tell him some Chinese traditions, such as using chopsticks and doing paper-cutting. I can also teach him to play Tai-chi if he is interested.

Yours sincerely. Li Hua
