Recently, I paid a visit to Harvard University. I was pretty shocked when I first stepped into it. Well, it’s not even really a university. It’s more like an area in a small town.
Harvard’s main buildings are from the 18th century. They look very old and simple. You might even say they’re a little old. There are many trees and grass around the buildings, so I felt as if I had walked into a medieval castle(中世纪的城堡). But when I looked across the street, busy shops and fashionable(时髦的) students made me feel like I was in the 21st century again. My friend Gary showed me around and told me, “Do you see the grass field in the center of the school? Here is where the students host their graduation ceremony.”
I saw some students put a blanket on the grass and then lie down to read a book. When I listened to the soft sound of pages turning and the singing of the birds, I felt very calm.
Harvard has the world’s first computer in its science center and there are hundreds of high-end computers, too. Its religion and literature departments are also among the best. Harvard is a perfect mix of tradition and new technology, which makes Harvard a very attractive university to study in. I hope one day I can enter my dream school — Harvard University. ( ) 41. It was Christmas in 1961. I was teaching in a small town in Ohio where my twenty-seven students looked forward to the great day of gift-giving. Everyone was excited except Maria. No one wanted to talk to her. I hoped the festival would make her happy but nothing did.
Students often made the popular fried marbles(油炸玻璃弹子) at home. So, as my gift to them, I made each of my students a little pouch(小袋) for carrying their fried marbles.
The day of gift-giving finally came. We gave gifts to each other happily but only Maria sat quietly watching us. I had made a special pouch for her, red and green with white lace(蕾丝). I wanted to see her smile very much. After giving her the pouch, I waited but she just turned away. After school everyone left except Maria. She came to me with a small white box. “For me?” I asked with a smile. She nodded. I took the box and opened it. There inside, was a beautiful green fried marble. Then I looked into her face. I knew she had made it for her mother, a mother she would never see again.
I held out the fried marble and said to her, “Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. Your mother will certainly love it.” Neither of us could stop the tears. I put my arms around her. Afternoon was Mrs Conroy’s favorite time of a day. After a hard-working day, she would enjoy a nice long nap when she was on the bus. Mrs Conroy had made friends with the bus driver, Mr Angstrom. He always woke her up before her stop.
But today was different. Mr Angstrom wasn’t driving. A small man sat in the driver’s seat. “Where’s Mr Angstrom?” asked Mrs Conroy, dropping her money into the box. “I don’t know. Sick, I guess. I just work here, lady.” said the man. Mrs Conroy didn’t like this new driver. She decided not to sleep on the way home today, because the driver didn’t look like the type who would like to help anyone.
Mrs Conroy looked out of the window. It was a warm afternoon. Though she tried to keep her eyes open, within a few minutes she closed her eyes. Her head dropped to her shoulders. The next thing Mrs Conroy knew was that someone was shaking her awake. “Wake up, lady. We’ve arrived at Essex Avenue.”
Mrs Conroy opened her eyes. This was exactly where she was going to get off. “How did you know?” Mrs Conroy asked.

Failure Is a Good Thing
Everyone has experienced failure, including me.
I remember when I was thirteen, I began to study English. At that time, I thought English was difficult to learn. I failed in English tests many times. I couldn’t remember English words well or speak English fluently, which made me very upset, but I didn’t give up. After working hard, and with my English teacher’s help, I can now write letters and talk with my classmates in English. What I’ve learned from my experience is that we can improve a lot if we make good use of failure, and never be defeated by it.
As the old saying goes, “Failure is the mother of success.” Sometimes failure can make us strong. Therefore, in my opinion, failure is a good thing.
