在美国的求职规则

在美国找工作有一定的规则,虽然不一定百分之百遵守。但掌握这些规则,不至于有错,可 谓入乡随俗。这些规则是:(1)要有一份好的简历。(2)要有自信心。(3)要有端庄的服装仪表。

(1)简历:美国人非常重视简历(Resume)因为这是找工作时给别人的“第一印象” ,未见其人,先见简历。可见简历之重要。对于刚毕业的学生,简历以一页为好。可在报纸或网上精选出10 个左右你认为适合你自己的工作机会,以最快的通讯方式,如传真、电子邮件(没办法才邮寄),送出你的简历。如果一周内接到 1-3个以上的面谈电话,则说明这份简历已经过关。

(2)自信心:求职面谈中,由于竞争激烈,每个应试者都应显示充分的自信,尽量给用人单位留下“这个位置非我莫属”的印象,这当然需要有专业方面成功的经验,清晰的英文表达能力,庄重的服装,甚至洒脱的风度。为支持自己的自信心,即使你以前从未做过这个职位的工作以前没你,也要自信并使对方确信你能在短期内很快胜任这一职务。

(3)服装:美国人平时穿着非常随便,不拘小节,怎么舒服就怎么穿。但在求职面谈时,却一定要西装革履,庄重和保守。对于大部分初次找工作的中国留学生来说,英语口语是致命的弱点,假如一个中国学生能讲一口流利的英语又有和美国专业市场对口的硕士或博士学位,找工作一定会易如反掌。因为对方会认为此人很聪明,能在短时间内掌握英语,还有什么知识不能很快学会呢?可这样的中国留学生自然是少而又少,大部分中国留学生初次找工作时,能把自己的经验和特长表达清楚就不错了。在美国没有绿卡,差不多可以用 10 年前在国内没有城市户口来比喻。可以这样说,有绿卡与无绿卡的工作机会比是 10:1。因为大

部分公司怕麻烦,不愿意为员工办绿卡,在找不到本国人的情况下,才雇用没有绿卡的外国人,而且将外国人的薪水压得很低。理由就是帮外国人办绿卡需要人力和财力,而许多中国留学生也深感找一个能办绿卡的工作不易,工资低也只好屈就了。 硕士或学士毕业生的社会需求量比博士、博士后多。因为博士、博士后只能在大学或大公司的研究机构中工作。而且专业也必须非常对口, 所以博士、博士后的工作面相对较窄。当然获得这些高学位的人也少,但总得说来还是供过于求。有不少中国留学生不得不放弃博士学位, 有的已经获得博士学位,经过一段努力,还是找不到相应工作,改用硕士学位反而找到了工作。

在美国,推荐人对于求职者来说也很重要。留学生可以请指导教授指点一下,这是很有帮助的,只有在他们了解你真正有能力胜任这份工作的情况下,才会帮你推荐,否则会影响他们的信誉。有了这份推荐,当然比没有强,但用人单位会面谈三个以上候选人,只有当用人单位经过比较,觉得三个(或以上)候选人条件差不多时,才会优先考虑有推荐人的候选人。
