What is the purpose of a university education? This is a topic as old as the university itself. In recent decades, its practical function is a way for students to find better employment which has been increasingly emphasized by the general public.

It is certainly true that the university should give its attendants an advantage when they hunt for a job in the job market, and the majority of parents want to send their children to universities do have that. In that case, they would be less likely to be disappointed. Since the tuition fee is far from low now, paying more attention to the employment issue of its graduates by the university can be well justified. But does that mean the main aim of university education should be that?

Despite its contribution to students’ employment, university education should have more benefits to offer to individuals as well as society as a whole. What a university should mainly focus on is the personality education, which would benefit its students a life-long time, such as finding a job to support their families and what relative closely to a job---happiness.

What’s more, its role in developing the personal morality of students should not be ignored either, and universities should carry on some essential researches, in the areas such as physics, where it is less likely for graduates to find jobs with high salaries but the long-term significance can never be underestimated.

In general, university has more than one role to play, and its first priority is not to train skillful professionals, but to benefit individuals and society in a much wider

sphere.
