Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I madethis important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how Iexperimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step inand make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to giveaway anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. OneSunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed tome at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a newbusiness I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a longwaiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t ityou that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly aregoing to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. Weusually get nothing but complaints.”
Television gives the American people a wide variety of programs from early morning until late at night. Operas,
orchestral performances, chamber music and jazz concerts are often presented on television. So most of the leisure at homeis used for watching television. Many Americans are so fond of their TV programs that they often have cold luncheon in frontof their receiving sets. Television has given people newer and deeper understanding of history, art, music, literature, theballet, the theater, the discoveries of modern science and the wonders of the universe. Television viewers pay no tax or
charges for receiving programs on their sets. The cost of the programs is paid chiefly by those who are given the opportunityto advertise their goods or services during the commercial breaks.

Interest in basketball in the United States peaks around three big championship events in the spring: the collegechampionships for men and women in late March or early April and the professional playoffs that climax in June.
But that’s only organized basketball. Informally, the game has been learned by generations of American youths on cityplaygrounds and schoolyards, on lonely baskets put up in backyards of rural homes and on the driveway basketball courts ofcountless suburban homes. Here, playing on teams, going one-on-one against a single opponent or just shooting the ballhour after hour alone, some of the finest basketball players have developed their skills to incredible levels.
But as brilliant as some players may be, basketball requires coaching to teach athletes skills they are deficient in and toblend a group of individuals into a team. Styles of coaching vary. Some coaches favor an extremely disciplined game witheach player having a specific role while others are more inclined to let their players dictate the style of play.
Some people insist that only today and tomorrow matter. But how much poorer we would be if we really lived by thatrule! So much of what we do today is frivolous and futile and soon forgotten. So much of what we hope to do tomorrow neverhappens.
The past is the bank in which we store our most valuable possession: the memories that give meaning and depth to ourlives. Those who truly treasure the past will not bemoan the passing of the good old days, because days enshrined in
memory are never lost. Death itself is powerless to still a remembered voice or erase a remembered smile. And for one boywho is now a man, there is a pond which neither time nor tide can change, where he can still spend a quiet hour in the sun.
